An account lets you play friends online, each of you moving whenever suits you. It’s only a name: no email and no password.
On the device that has it, open this screen and press Show key. Scan its QR code with this device’s camera, or paste the key or the link here.
Anyone who opens your friend link becomes your friend straight away. Remove or block them in Friends if you need to.
Search for their name, or type the code shown beside it. They’re asked to accept.
Your key is your account. Use it to sign in on another device, and keep a copy somewhere private, like a password manager. If this device loses it and you have no copy, the account is gone and you make a new one.
This account is an admin of Étude’s server.
The account stays on the server, and your key brings it back.
Deletes it for good, on every device: games under way are resigned, and you’re removed from your friends’ lists.

A party trick, played by the Étude engine. It moves only that piece and plays for chances rather than safety. If it loses every one of them, it resigns. If you are left with a bare king, its whole army is freed.
Online games need an account. It’s only a name, and takes a few seconds.
For someone who isn’t your friend in Étude yet. When they open the link and enter their name, the game starts and you become friends.
Got a code from a friend? Type it here, or paste the link they sent.
Every online game is kept on Étude’s server. When you move, your move goes to the server, which checks it and passes it to the other player. If they have the app open, it appears straight away. If not, it waits for them, and they get a notification if they’ve turned those on.
So you can play a game in one sitting, or a move a day. Choose a time limit per move when you start a game if you want one: whoever runs out of time loses.
Your account is a name and a key kept on your device. The server never has your key, so nobody can sign in as you without it. Keep a copy (Your account, Show key) if you want to use the account on another device or keep it if this device is reset.
Play both sides to work through a line yourself. The Review tab has the eval bar and move feedback in both. New game starts again from this position.
Send the link, or just the code. When they open it in Étude and enter their name, the game starts and you become friends.
